Planetary status decision rumor

October 1st, 2005

Rumor has it that the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has either made a decision (or will soon) as to whether or not the tenth planet will really be classified as a planet or not. News to follow as soon as anything is confirmed.

    Bello,

The tenth planet should be called PROSERPINE and not XENA.

    I’m from Republic of Moldova
and I think that it shouldn’t be classified as a planet , because there should be the 11th , 12th “planets” , and so on , but these objects are only some kind of asteroids , meteorits , something like that
I hope that I’ll find out the answer as soon as possible

  3. kaiitlyn Isaksen Says:

whats the planets real name? or did you not name the 10th planet yet?
im a 6th grader doing a repport. i need this information.

    thanks for reading!!!!

  4. Administrator Says:

Sorry, but they have not yet named it.

  5. 400vip Says:

im just wondering because if they say its not a planat pluto may not be a planet by there defitniton

  6. Erin Says:

That’s the problem. If this planet is not defined as a planet, then Pluto probably shouldn’t be, either.

I would love the name Persephone, but alas, 399 Persephone is an asteroid in the Asteroid Belt and already has the name. :(

  7. Cassandra Says:

I think the person (scientist) who discovered it should have the privilege of naming the planet he found. As long as the name isn’t derogatory or offensive then his choice should take precedence over anyone else’s…Xena is a fabulous name.

  8. Abyssoft Says:

I am definately of the opinion that any body that is spherical(ellipsoidal) under its own gravitational influence that does not fuse elements should be classified as a planet. This would increase the number of planets in our solarsystem quite a bit but I am more then willing to accept this. for those that wish to only think of the current 9 as planets simply refer to those as historic planets.

  9. C.S Says:

Well I agree with Cassandra, the scientist should be the one who decides what the tenth planets name is !! The IAU should just let it be named Xena, I mean come on thats a killer name! WHO WOULDNT want a planet named after a worrior princess? The moon that orbits it should remain Gabrielle too. Thats sweet. :)

  10. aya Says:

    hello

i am solving my science home wrk that is about the 10th planet so i hope they find a name for it and the scientist should call the plaet an interesting name because planets are not often found a lot and by the way xena is a fabulous name

  11. yasmeen Says:
