Update on Tenth Planet’s name

August 10th, 2005

It looks highly likely that the tenth planet will not be named Xena. The IAU is the group responsible for approving astronomical names and they have suggested that the name should follow in the Greco-Roman tradition that the previous planets used. Since Xena does not fall into the Greco-Roman naming structure, the discoverers will have to come up with a more suitable name. Pity. I was hoping Xena would be approved. In addition, the IAU first must decide if they agree that the object really is a planet. Only after they make this decision, will they agree to a name.

  36. Abyssoft Says:

My personal vote for naming 2005 UB303, is Nox (primordial goddess of night).

  37. bumface Says:

persphone is taken, its a moon i think. If the guy who discovered it in 1895 were still alive i’d tell him to rename his moon so the tenth planet should be called it. i dont like the name cerberous. Name it after a god!, Theka is also a good suggestion.

  38. Temperance+++ Says:

I am a Taurus and I just read Linda Goodmans book (written in 1975) and I thing we should observe her speculation about it and the effect it has on Taurians. I agree we should keep it PAN-HORUS.

Before having discovered Linda Goodman (just today) I have had a relationship with Horus as my patron diety and Cornunos (very relative to Pan). Being a spiritual person, this is more than a coincidence to me!

  39. Steve Says:

Actually, the ancient Sumerians, in their various cylinder seals and what-not, believed in an extra planet, and called it Nibiru.

It’s also interesting to note that they knew of Pluto (calling it Gaga). What makes it interesting is that the modern world didn’t discover Pluto until the 1930’s.

  40. sevvanthi Says:

Even before greco -roman era indians invented astro science , and they calculated the weight of earth, sun and moon accurately .Its in the vedas. And they started astrology so many thousands years back. so i think if the tenth planet is a truth give it a indian name like dasya(tenth) or swetha(white)or hima(snow). please consider the oldest astro scientists of the world , indians .

  41. sevvanthi Says:

EVEN BEFORE GRECO-ROMAN ERA , INDIANS INVENTED THE GREAT SCIENCE OF ASTONOMY. THEY CALCULATED THE MASS OF THE EARTH, MOON , SUN AND OTHER PLANETS, ACCURATELY.ITS IN THEIR VEDAS(INDIAN RELIGIOUS BOOKS) PLEASE CONSIDER THIS OLDEST ASTRO SCIENTISTS AND GIVE AN INDIAN NAME TO THE TENTH PLANET….LIKE HIMA(SNOW),DASA(TENTH),SWETHA(WHITE)..

  42. Steve Says:

With due respect to the vedas, their information is taken largely from previous Sumerian writings. Reread the vedas, then look for something called the Enuma Elish, which is the Sumerian Genesis. You’ll find many correlations between the two, as well as similarities between the stories in the vedas and the stories of greco-roman mythology.

  43. Tim Says:

    Name it Terminus after the
Roman god of bounderies since it would be considered the new boundery of the solar system

  44. Marco Says:

The planets are all named after gods of the roman pantheon, and here are the names left:

Apollo (Apollo) | god of the arts (esp. poetry and music)

Bacchus (Dionysos) | god of wine and mysteries

Diana (Artemis) | goddess of the hunt and protector of children

Juno (Hera) | goddess of marriage; consort of Jupiter

Minerva (Athena) | goddess of wisdom, war, and crafts

Vulcan (Hephaistos) | god of smiths and metal-workers

  45. Marco Says:

Actually Persephone (Greek) is Proserpina in the Roman Pantheon. As Rafael suggested, it should be name Proserpina.

  46. nicole Says:

    THANK U

  47. Ty Wolfenstein Says:

We should call it Plutina. That’s what my 5th grade teacher thought Pluto was called.

  48. bob Says:

i thought it was and also limbo!

  49. Jenyffer Says:

Why can’t they just leave it Xena! its a perfect name! i know they are trying to go about tradition for a mythological name, But its a small, easy, simple name…Its “almost” mythological…and the name Xena did arive from a mythological name. I think it was XENIA: Greek name meaning “welcoming.” Variants include Xeenia, Xena, Zeena, Zeenia, and Zena.

  50. girlyplanet.,.,.,... Says:

.,.,.,…hmmm.,.,… Dionysus is a nice name, it means Goddess of Wine…let’s just leave the name of it to the scientists!!!! maybe they will choose the nicest!!! but please a name from the greek mythodology.,.,.,.:>
